1. How does dry cleaning work?

Despite its name, dry cleaning is not totally dry. It involves the use of liquid chemicals called ‘solvents’ that remove most stains from a variety of fabrics. Most dry cleaners use perc as their primary solvent. Because the clothes are cleaned in a liquid solution that is mostly perc or some other solvent, with very little water if any, the term ‘dry cleaning’ is used to describe the process. There are some differences in the way dry cleaners process clothes, but here is how it typically works:

• Dry cleaners usually treat spots by hand before placing garments in large machines.
• Liquid solvents, detergents, and sometimes a small amount of water are added to the machines. The machines then agitate clothes in a manner similar to your own washing machine to remove dirt, oil, and stains.
• Once clean, the clothes are either dried in the same machine or transferred manually to a separate dryer, then pressed and shaped.

2. Why do my clothes need to be dry-cleaned rather than washed?

Those clothes which have heavier soil and/or grease stains should be dry-cleaned, as it protects dyes and keeps colors more vibrant. Also, certain fabrics such as wool, acetates, tri-acetates and rayon, require dry cleaning so as not to damage the textiles.

3. What makes one dry cleaner better than another?

Dry cleaning is both a sophisticated science and art form. Skilled dry-cleaning operators are skilled experts in stain and fabric recognition, chemical components, types of tailoring techniques, and quality assessment of garments. Dry cleaning involves heat, moisture, dyes, and chemicals, all of which can ultimately affect the end result of the garment. Often more expensive name brands use a multitude of fabrics, embellishments and dyes to create a beautiful garment; all of those factors must be taken in to consideration before proper care can be given.

4. How do I properly store my garments?

The most important aspect to proper storage is to make sure that the garment has been professionally cleaned. Damage to garments can be drastically reduced if the garment has been properly cleaned; that is, that all the stains and soil have been removed prior to being stored. Dry cleaning destroys most insects as acts as a deterrent.

In addition, remove all plastic bags from garments, which reduce the amount of air circulation that clothes need to breathe. If you must store clothes away, use acid-free boxes and paper to prevent oxidized stains. Store garments in a cool dry and well ventilated area, as mildew grows under conditions of heat, moisture and humidity.
